Main research interests
My research interests span a fairly wide range of ecological topics, with a particular focus on those that are most relevant for the conservation of biological diversity. In general they involve the study of natural and anthropogenic determinants of the use of space by species in natural and managed ecosystems, including those dominated by farming and agroforestry.
In collaboration with a number of colleagues and students I am presently working on several projects in temperate and tropical regions, mostly focused on birds and bats or using these two groups as models. In Iberia and North Africa we are investigating how to improve the management of landscapes dominated by Cork and Holm Oak woodlands, which cover much of the western Mediterranean, to enhance their value for biodiversity. This includes studying the conservation consequences of abandonment, grazing, cork extraction, canopy pruning and the establishment of lines of riparian vegetation. We are also investigating the potential consequences of climate change on Mediterranean birds, particularly those inhabiting cork oak woodlands and cereal steppes. In West Africa we are investigating the ecology of forest pigeons (determinants of habitat use, foraging ecology and role as seed dispersers) and how to minimize the impact of hunting on their populations. In Amazonia we have been studying potential factors influencing the structure of bat communities, including the roles of seasonal flooding, nutrients and fragmentation.
