• My research

I aim to measure the relationship between biodiversity, microclimate and the functioning of ecosystems, in particular the functions linked to the carbon cycle and storage. I will focus here on the effects of tree diversity and climate modulation on the response of soil litter decomposition and basal respiration, key ecosystem processes in the carbon and nutrient cycles. The thesis project comprises three axes: (i) quantifying the effects of forest species diversity on in situ microclimate modulation; (ii) quantifying the combined effects of tree species richness and microclimate modulation on leaf litter decomposition and soil respiration in situ and in the laboratory; (iii) mathematical simulation of the dynamics of carbon from decomposition, including the relationship between tree diversity and microclimate modulation.

Field work for the two first axes will be carried out along a latitudinal gradient of forest plots in the French Alps (https://oreme.org/observation/foret/gmap/) .The second axis of research will be completed in the laboratory by modulating the microclimate in micro- and mesocosms and measuring the response of ecosystem functions such as soil decomposition and respiration.

The third axis of research will test hypotheses of research thanks to the Virtual Ecosystem modelling platform (https://virtual-ecosystem.readthedocs.io/en/), and integrate lab and field measures into the model in order to improve its calibration.
