My PhD will investigate how microhabitat structural complexity shapes microclimatic conditions, soil fauna, and litter decomposition under global change.
My research background spans Mediterranean, tropical, and boreal ecosystems, with experience in experimental design, soil fauna identification, and chemical and statistical analyses.

My research
I aim to quantify the effects of habitat complexity, both, in terms of the structural diversity and thickness of the litter layer, and the presence of shelter (such as pieces of dead wood) and its characteristics, which may also contribute to microclimate buffering, on the abundance, diversity and community composition of the soil fauna. Further, I aim to distinguish the relative importance of direct microclimate modulation effects on litter decomposition and carbon and nutrient cycling from indirect microclimate and shelter-induced modifications of the fauna and microbial community.
My thesis is structured in two main work packages: 1) the experimental study of habitat complexity effects on decomposer communities and leaf litter decomposition in the field under contrasting macroclimatic conditions. 2) a more detailed mechanistic assessment of the impact of habitat complexity on specific soil fauna taxa and the consequences for decomposition under controlled laboratory conditions.
