Yildiz Aumeeruddy-Thomas développe des recherches qui interrogent les relations entre les sociétés et la nature. Initialement formée en botanique tropicale à l'Université de Montpellier, elle développe très vite un fort intérêt pour les ethnosciences, les sciences de sociétés non-industrielles, des praticiens, leurs savoirs et pratiques sur le vivant. Ses travaux se situent à la croisée de la botanique, l'anthropologie et l'écologie pour développer l'ethnobotanique et l'ethnoécologie. Les grands biomes qu'elle appréhende sont les forêts tropicales humides, le hautes montagnes Himalayennes et la Méditerranée, où elle a développé des études de cas lors de ces 40 dernières années sur les sociétés, leurs pratiques et leurs représentations de la nature. Elle s’intéresse à la fois à la diversité des interfaces entre nature et culture, mais aussi aux traits communs qui caractérisent les sociétés humaines et leurs expériences avec le vivant. Elle met en place des études interdisciplinaires pour appréhender la relation entre les humains et les arbres, les agroforêts ou les plantes de cueillette au travers des ethnosciences, mais aussi avec l'aide de nombreux écologues. Elle met en outre en place dans ses travaux sur la domestication des arbres et de l’agrobiodiversité en Méditerranéenne, des démarches de co-construction avec des praticiens de terrain pour tenter de répondre à de grands enjeux environnementaux et en particulier l'impact du changement climatique. Soucieuse des grandes questions environnementales actuelles, elle est engagée dans le dialogue entre sciences et politiques, notamment à l'IPBES en tant qu’auteur de la première Evaluation Globale.

Yildiz Aumeeruddy-Thomas conducts research that examines the relationship between societies and nature. Initially trained in tropical botany at the University of Montpellier, she quickly developed a keen interest in ethnosciences, the sciences of non-industrial societies, practitioners, and their knowledge and practices relating to living organisms. Her work lies at the crossroads of botany, anthropology and ecology, for the development of ethnobotany and ethnoecology. The major biomes she studies are tropical rainforests, the high Himalayan mountains and the Mediterranean agroforests, where she has developed case studies over the last 40 years with different societies, their practices and their representations of nature. She is interested in both the diversity of interfaces between nature and culture and the common traits that characterise human societies and their experiences with living organisms. She conducts interdisciplinary studies to understand the relationship between humans and trees, agroforests and wild plants through ethnoscience, but also with the help of numerous ecologists. In her work on tree domestication and agrobiodiversity in the Mediterranean, she also implements co-construction approaches with practitioners in the field in an attempt to address major environmental issues, particularly the impact of climate change. Concerned about today's major environmental issues, she is engaged in dialogue between science and policy, notably at IPBES as author of the first Global Assessment.

RESILIÂNCE project (2025-2028): Pilote/ Principal Investigator, Yildiz A-Thomas, CEFE-CNRS & 13 partners in Cévennes, Ardèche, Corsica, Dordogne, Ariège, Var and Aveyron
Il s'agit d'un projet collaboratif basé sur la co-construction et des approches transdisciplinaires visant à comprendre comment les châtaigniers et les producteurs de châtaignes peuvent faire face au changement climatique. Il comprend des observations des variétés de châtaignes dans 35 sites de référence ou laboratoires vivants, avec des producteurs de châtaignes, la revitalisation des connaissances locales relatives à l'identification des variétés locales menacées, et des expérimentations innovantes avec des producteurs de châtaignes dans 9 départements français : Cévennes, Ardèche, Corse, Dordogne, Ariège, Var et Aveyron. Il vise également à soutenir le Syndicat National des Producteurs de Châtaignes dans ses démarches décisionnelles pour la structuration du secteur de la châtaigne en France. RESILIÂNCE interagit au niveau européen par une participation active au groupe EUROCASTANEA. Ce projet est basé sur une convention entre le CNRS et le ministère français de l'Agriculture et de la Sécurité alimentaire.
This is a collaborative project based on co-construction and transdisciplinary approaches aiming at understanding how chestnut and chestnut growers may face climate change. It includes practitioners' observations of chestnut varieties on-farm in 35 Reference Sites or living labs, with chestnut producers, revitalization of local knowledge relating to the identification of threatened local varieties, and innovative experimentations with chestnut growers in 9 french departments across Cévennes, Ardèche, Corsica, Dordogne, Ariège, Var and Aveyron. It also aims at supporting the Syndicat National des Producteurs de Châtaignes in their decisional approaches for the structuration of the chestnut sector in France. RESILIÂNCE interacts with the European level through active participation to the group EUROCASTANEA. This project is based on a convention between the CNRS and the french Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security.

Research Themes
(1) Synergies between local and scientific knowledge for a deeper understanding of social-ecological systems
My thesis in Sumatra under the Direction of Francis Hallé (Tropical Botanist) and the guidance of Claudine Friedberg (Antropologist, specialised in Indonesian societies) gave me the opportunity to study the relationships between the Kerinci people and their highly complex agroforestry systems, comprising hundreds of trees, domesticated and wild, with multiple material and symbolic values that integrate tubers, spicy species, medicinals and magic species, all of which are intricately linked to the Kerinci people's life. The Kerinci people, would not have been very happy to speak with somebody that could not perceive the difference between a durian, a mangosteen, or the 22 varieties of bananas that they grew or even the 13 species of wild bambous that they encouraged to grow in the agroforests. Fortunately I was trained in tropical botany and in ecology in Montpellier. However to understand such systems I also required to develop approaches in anthropology, and was highly encouraged by Claudine Friedberg and other anthropologists with whom I eagerly developed many exchanges. Adjoining the agroforestry systems, the ricefields were not less diverse, although seemingly very homogenous. Precisely, all the different varieties of traditional rice harmoniously matured at about the same time, thus preventing people from having to watch only withina short period, the birds that attack the ripe rice. Yet newly introduced varieties grew in different small and fragmented plots that ripened at different periods; they represented an easy prey for the birds, making the life of Kerinci people extremely difficult. They spent a huge amount of time protecting their precious staple food with a variety of strange sounds and mecanical systems to keep away the birds. My thesis was therefore a school in situ about the importance of agrobiodiversity, rythms of labor in an agrarian society and the necessity to look carefully in situ at the complexity of local social organizations as well as ecology. Multiple evidence approaches, giving a full attention to local knowledge through ethnographic studies while also using approaches to observe ecological phenomena is a prerequisite to develop our understanding of such social-ecological systems.
(2) Classifications and local ontologies: how to establish a dialogue between different actors in order to seek sustainable approaches
Since 1990, I have studied ways different sociéties, the Kerinci people in Indonesia, the Dolpo people in Nepal, the Cevenols in France, the Jbala in Morocco and lately the Pantescans in Pantelleria, Sicily, classify living elements of nature, and also soils, winds, as well as non-tangible. These studies are based on ethnographic data and fine and long periods of field-based investigations, represent the means of understanding the basis of local knowledge systems and how local collective human groups classify and share knowledge about nature. Such approaches have led to a major result that is the overlapping of different classification systems within each of these societies, showing different relational systems, that may vary according to professions, differentiations between symbolic and naturalist classifications. Classifications, as well as recording of myths and local stories, investigating memory and attachment, as well as ways a given society engage materially through practices with plants or other elements of nature, are the set of elements required to decipherhuman-nature ontologies, i.e. principles that regulate the relationships between people and other elements of nature.
(3) Domestications past and on-going, dynamics of agroecosystems, agrobiodiversity and associated local knowledge and practices at landscape level ; associated multiple values
My work has focused since 2006 in the Mediterranean basin, on 'traditional' agroecosystems in northern Morocco and France and lately in Sicily. My focus on trees, especially in Morocco on olive (Olea europeae), almonds (Prunus dulcis) and figs (Ficus carica), as well as argan (Argania spinosa) has enabled to foster our understanding of ways people interact with a tree populations forming a continuum ranging from wild parents, feral or escapees from agriculture, to domesticated landraces within local territories
(4) Dialogue between science and policy for the inclusion of local and indigenous knowledge and promotion of transformative changes within the context of global changes.
