    Mes travaux de recherche concernent la biodiversité végétale et fongique source de substances naturelles (composés phénoliques, saponines, composés organiques volatils, peptides, exsudats racinaires) permettant les interactions de la plante ou du champignon avec son environnement (micro-organismes, microfaune, homme) et dont certaines présentent des activités biologiques valorisables par l’homme (dépollution, agro-alimentaire, pharmaceutique, industriel…) ou un impact négatif sur la santé humaine (toxines fongiques) .

     

    My research focuses on vegetal and fungal biodiversity source of natural substances (phenolic compounds, saponins, volatile organic compounds, peptides, root exudates) allowing interactions of the plant or the mushroom with its environment (microorganisms, microfauna, human) with biological activities valorizable by human (mycoremediation, agro-alimentary, pharmaceutical, industrial) or with a negative impact on human health (fungal toxin).

    Ma principale activité de recherche porte sur l’évolution et la diversité taxinomique des macromycètes, que j’aborde via l’analyse phylogénétique d’échantillons issus d’un large réseau de mycologues européens partenaires. Je constitue aussi une extractothèque fongique destinée à mettre en évidence et valoriser le potentiel bioactif de ces organismes dans le domaine de la santé humaine.

    My research is mainly focused on the evolution and the taxonomic diversity of higher fungi. I am adressing this issue through the phylogenetic analysis of samples originating from a broad network of European partner mycologists. I am also assembling a fungal extract library, aiming at revealing and promoting the bioactivities of these organisms in the field of human health.

    Objectif (français) : 

    Ma thèse fait partie du projet collaboratif « SoilForEUROPE » avec la participation de plusieurs partenaires en France, en Allemagne, en Belgique, en Suède et en Pays-Bas. SoilForEUROPE vise à comprendre la relation entre la diversité des espèces d’arbres et la diversité des organismes du sol, et leurs conséquences pour le fonctionnement des écosystèmes forestiers sous changement climatique à l’échelle Européenne.IMG 20170819 WA0007

    L’objectif de ma thèse est de comprendre les mécanismes sous-jacents de la résistance et la résilience du fonctionnement microbien (l’activité microbien et les flux de gaz) face à des évènements de sècheresse extrême sous conditions contrôlées (sur le terrain et à l’Ecotron Européen à Montpellier). Je vais également interagir étroitement avec l’ensemble des membres du consortium sur différents aspects liés aux activités microbiennes (la diversité microbienne, la diversité de la faune de sol, le fonctionnement des racines, etc.).   

    Objective (english) :

    My PhD is part of the SoilForEUROPE project including several partners from France, Germany, Belgium, Sweden, and the Netherlands. SoilForEUROPE aims to understand the relationships between tree species diversity and soil diversity, and their consequences for ecosystem functioning across major European forest types under climate change.

    The objective of my PhD is to understand the driving mechanisms of ecosystem resistance and resilience of microbial functioning (microbial activity and trace gas fluxes) to extreme drought events under controlled conditions (in the field and at the European Ecotron in Montpellier). I will also closely interact with all members of the consortium on related aspects (microbial diversity, soil fauna diversity, root functioning, etc.).

    Sur le terrain, je participe à la récolte de Macromycètes pour la recherche et pour l’enseignement de la mycologie aux étudiants de la faculté de pharmacie.

Les deux thèmes principaux que j'étudie sont les interactions entre plantes et insectes (pollinisation, symbioses), et les interactions entre ingénieurs d'écosystèmes dans la structuration du paysage.

     

    My research activity is focused on the ecological and evolutionary aspects of inter-specific interactions. My two main study topics are plant-insect interactions (pollination, symbiosis), and the role of interactions among ecosystem engineers in landscape patterns.

    My research focuses on plant and mushroom substances (i.e., phenolic compounds or volatiles) of industrial interest presenting applications in  food (flavours, alimentary complements) or pharmaceutical (antioxidants, antiinflammatory, anticancerous, antimicrobial) industries,  of ecological interest (rhizosphere, chemical ecology) or with an impact on human health (fungal toxins, pharmacological properties).

    My principal area of research is Evolutionary genetics and evolutionary ecology. I have a broad expertise in evolutionary biology, genetics and ecology.

    I have been working on adaptation and mutation, local adaptation, evolution of genetic systems (sex, recombination, sex chromosomes), evolution of gene duplicates, speciation, genetic conflicts, dispersal, biotic interactions (parasites, microbiota), statistics and fitness measures. I have been working with many empirical systems (vertebrates, insects, crustaceans, fungi, plants, helminths, bacteria), in the lab and in the field.

    Currently, my scientific activity rests on three axes: first I do theoretical work (theoretical population genetics, statistics, and bioinformatics development). I am particularly interested currently on the evolution of gene expression (on sex chromosomes or in asexuals). Second, I work on small crustaceans Artemia and Daphnia. I’m particularly interested currently on sex-asex transitions, biotic interactions and adaptation to temperature. Third, I do experimental evolution on E. coli. I'm particularly interested on testing fitness landscape models, adaptation to different doses of antibiotics, and coevolution of species coexisting by frequency dependence.

    Yildiz Aumeeruddy-Thomas développe des travaux qui interrogent les relations entre les sociétés et la biodiversité, et la nature plus largement. Anthropologue et écologue, ses travaux se situent à la croisée de ces deux disciplines. Ayant travaillé dans divers grands biomes de la planète, les forêts tropicales humides, le hautes montagnes Himalayennes et la Méditerranée au cours de ces 35 dernières années, elle s’intéresse à la fois à la diversité des interfaces entre nature et culture, mais aussi aux traits communs qui caractérisent les sociétés humaines et leurs expériences avec le vivant. Soucieuse des grandes questions environnementales actuelles, elle est engagée dans le dialogue entre sciences et politiques, notamment à l'IPBES en tant qu’auteur de l’Evaluation Globale. Elle a mené au cours des dix dernières années, des travaux sur la domestication des arbres et l’agrobiodiversité en Méditerranéenne. .

    Yildiz Aumeeruddy-Thomas' work examines the relationships between societies and biodiversity, and nature more broadly. As an anthropologist and ecologist, her work lies at the crossroads of these two disciplines. Having worked in a number of the planet's major biomes - tropical rainforests, the Himalayan high mountains and the Mediterranean - over the last 35 years, she is interested both in the diversity of the interfaces between nature and culture, and in the common features that characterise human societies and their experiences with living beings. Keenly aware of today's major environmental issues, she is involved in the dialogue between science and policy, notably at IPBES as author of the Global Assessment (2019). Over the last ten years, she has been working on the domestication of trees and agrobiodiversity in the Mediterranean.

    (1) Synergies between local and scientific knowledge for a deeper understanding of social-ecological systems

    My thesis in Sumatra under the Direction of Francis Hallé (Tropical Botanist) and the guidance of Claudine Friedberg (Antropologist, specialised in Indonesian societies) gave me the opportunity to study the relationships between the Kerinci people and their highly complex agroforestry systems, comprising hundreds of trees, domesticated and wild, with multiple material and symbolic values that integrate tubers, spicy species, medicinals and magic species, all of which are intricately linked to the Kerinci people's life. The Kerinci people, would not have been very happy to speak with somebody that could not perceive the difference between a durian, a mangosteen, or the 22 varieties of bananas that they grew or even the 13 species of wild bambous that they encouraged to grow in the agroforests.  Fortunately I was trained in tropical botany and in ecology in Montpellier. However to understand such systems I also required to develop approaches in anthropology, and was highly encouraged by Claudine Friedberg and other anthropologists with whom I eagerly developed many exchanges. Adjoining the agroforestry systems, the ricefields were not less diverse, although seemingly very homogenous. Precisely, all the different varieties of traditional rice harmoniously matured at about the same time, thus preventing people from having to watch only withina short period, the birds that attack the ripe rice. Yet newly introduced varieties grew in different small and fragmented plots that ripened at different periods; they represented an easy prey for the birds, making the life of Kerinci people extremely difficult. They spent a huge amount of time protecting their precious staple food with a variety of strange sounds and mecanical systems to keep away the birds. My thesis was therefore a school in situ about the importance of agrobiodiversity, rythms of labor in an agrarian society and the necessity to look carefully in situ at the complexity of local social organizations as well as ecology. Multiple evidence approaches, giving a full attention to local knowledge through ethnographic studies while also using approaches to observe ecological phenomena is a prerequisite to develop our understanding of such social-ecological systems.

    (2) Classifications and local ontologies: how to establish a dialogue between different actors in order to seek sustainable approaches

    Since 1990, I have  studied ways different sociéties, the Kerinci people in Indonesia, the Dolpo people in Nepal, the Cevenols in France, the Jbala in Morocco and lately the Pantescans in Pantelleria, Sicily, classify living elements of nature, and also soils, winds, as well as non-tangible. These studies  are based on ethnographic data and fine and long periods of  field-based investigations, represent the means of understanding the basis of local knowledge systems and how local collective human groups classify and share knowledge about nature. Such approaches have led to a major result that is the overlapping of different classification systems within each of these societies, showing different relational  systems, that may vary according to professions, differentiations between symbolic and naturalist classifications. Classifications, as well as recording of myths and local stories, investigating memory and attachment, as well as ways a given society engage materially through practices with plants or other elements of nature, are the set of elements required to decipherhuman-nature  ontologies, i.e. principles that regulate the relationships between people and other elements of nature.

    (3) Domestications past and on-going, dynamics of agroecosystems, agrobiodiversity and associated local knowledge and practices at landscape level ; associated multiple values

    My work has focused since 2006 in the Mediterranean basin, on 'traditional' agroecosystems in northern Morocco and France and lately in Sicily. My focus on trees, especially in Morocco on olive (Olea europeae), almonds (Prunus dulcis) and figs (Ficus carica), as well as argan (Argania spinosa) has enabled to foster our understanding of ways people interact with a tree populations forming a continuum ranging  from wild parents, feral or escapees from agriculture, to domesticated landraces within local territories

    (4) Dialogue between science and policy for the inclusion of local and indigenous knowledge and promotion of transformative changes within the context of global changes.
