The diversity of the living world (biodiversity) is difficult to understand. Are communities saturated or are some functions not fullfilled? Is there a redundancy of species playing the same role? How does this diversity arise? What is the weight of history, and of past global change in particular? What is the destiny of these communities confronted with man-induced changes?

Answering these questions is central for the understanding of what is evolution as well as for perspectives in conservation biology. They would allow a scientific answer to the questions: what is the use of biodiversity?

Communities are however generally fuzzy entities. For instance if we observe a plant pollinated by an insect species, we do not know if it is an ancient situtation, the different species having more or less influenced each other during their evolution, on whether it is a punctual, transient situation, or whether it is a new situation that is going to last. It is therefore difficult to understand the origin and the future of networks of facultative interactions.

To bypass  this problem, the biotic interactions team has decided to investigate communities based on simple biological models constituted by specific long term interactions. Specificity and durability ensures that the strength of these interactions will shape the evolution of these species. My non exclusive predilection model is the community of micro-hymenopteran associated with figs.

There are about 1000 species of Ficus distributed throughout the tropics. Each is associated with a community of specific hymenopteran breeding within figs (the enclosed inflorescence of Ficus, the inside of which is lined by female florets). The larva may develop by transforming the flower into a gall, as cleptoparasites of a galling insect, as parasitoids or even as seed eaters. Ficus are exclusivel pollinated by a familli of galling chalcids, the Agaonidae, which have coevolved with Ficus.

Ficus also play an important role in conservation biology because of their role in sustaining communities of seed dispersers. A number of facets of our studies deal with providing practical answers to apllied questions.

The main participants in the team's projects on Ficus are Astrid Cruaud (CBGP), Martine Hossaert-McKey, Magali Proffit, Jean-Yves Rasplus (CBGP), Bertrand Schatz, Yildiz Aumeeruddy-Thomas.
