About me

I am a Portuguese conservationist with a background in ecology. I enjoy watching birds and studying their grand migrations! I have been fortunate to collaborate with different projects in Portugal, Africa and Central Asia. I am particularly interested in animal movement patterns and behaviour, adaptation of species to land-use and climate change, and the role of common species in modified ecosystems.

My project

Understanding declines of Afro-Palearctic migratory birds

 The declines of many Afro-Palearctic migratory birds represent a major conservation challenge. The main objective of my PhD is to identify areas important for multiple Afro-Palearctic migratory birds to aid prioritizing international conservation, including through relevant policy processes. My research will focus on two key questions:

• Are there important areas of convergence of migratory birds requiring urgent conservation?

• Do declining migratory birds share pathways, schedules or other strategies during migration?

I hope my research will provide novel scientific evidence to improve flyway-scale conservation of Afro-Palaearctic migratory birds and their habitats.

The project will benefit from the extensive experience and expertise of bird conservation and ecology of BirdLife International, the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB), the British Trust for Ornithology (BTO). I am at CEFE, but will spend a period of 10 months at Birdlife International in Cambridge (UK), and a few weeks doing fieldwork to fit tracking loggers in White Storks in Castro Verde, Portugal (University of Lisbon - ISA).

This PhD project is part of the Inspire4Nature, an European Training programme at the interface between the science and the policy of international-scale biodiversity conservation, and funded by Marie Skłodowska-Curie Horizon 2020 initiative.
