Résumé :
Diplômé d’un doctorat en écologie, le cherche à mieux comprendre les effets qu’induisent les modifications de l’environnement à différentes échelles – du paysage à la parcelle - sur les communautés, les populations et les traits des invertébrés du sol. J’analyse les effets des changements d’occupation du sol, comme l’urbanisation, sur les communautés et les interactions. Je m’intéresse fortement aux problématiques d’agroécologie, dans les paysages ruraux mais aussi urbains.J’ai des compétences fortes dans l’intégration de la dynamique spatiale des processus, dans la détermination d’invertébrés. je fais partie d’un collectif « art-science » qui vise à sensibiliser le public à la protection des sols.

Research interests

Soil scientist fascinated by plant ecophysiology, my research focusses on soil-plant interactions in both natural and controlled conditions. I am particularly interested in silicon (Si), a major component of the Earth’s crust and soils, that is increasingly considered as a key element in plant ecology and agriculture through the fantastic process of biosilicification (mineral deposits in plant organs as seen on the left).

Research thematic

I combine expertise in soil science and plant ecophysiology to work on three different research axes:

• The influence of soil properties, and in particular their evolution over time through the use of long-term chronosequences, on silicon cycling (e.g., soil Si pools and fluxes, Si availability for plants, Si uptake by plants and silicification, biological versus lithological control on Si cycling)
• The control of overlooked biotic factors on soil-plant Si mobility (e.g., soil microorganisms, large herbivores, root exudates), and how they could be leveraged to increase crop Si status through specific agricultural practices.
• Developing functional trait-based approaches to better understand the role and functions of Si and silicification in plant ecophysiology, and how it aligns with major ecological theories (plant growth/defense tradeoff, plant economics spectrum, resource availability hypothesis, etc.).

Research questions

How do different facets of biodiversity affect the functioning and stability of (agro)ecosystems?

What are the roles of plant-plant interactions and functional traits in determining (agro)ecosystem functioning?

What are the drivers of the global distribution of crop species diversity ?

Can plant functional traits predict the multifunctionality of (agro)ecosystems ?

To address these questions, I assemble concepts, theories and tools from functional ecology, biogeography, agronomy and quantitative ecology. I mainly focus on cultivated ecosystems and their associated plant communities, including crop and weed species. My researches cover a range of spatio-temporal scales, from very local (e.g. plant-plant interactions) to global (e.g. global distribution of crop) and pluriannual (e.g. long-term ecosystem stability) scales.

D'abord formé à la biologie et à l'écologie, je me suis ensuite tourné vers l'ethnologie dont j'ai adopté et adapté les méthodes afin de mieux comprendre les relations entre humains et animaux, notamment à travers l'étude des savoirs écologiques et éthologiques des populations locales.

J'essaye ainsi de comprendre comment ces savoirs se construisent en interaction avec des animaux dont l'écologie et le comportement sont par ailleurs influencés par les pratiques humaines. Jusqu'à présent je me suis principalement intéressé aux relations entre humains et grands prédateurs (ours, loups, lynx) en me focalisant sur les savoirs, les perceptions et les pratiques des chasseurs, des éleveurs et des bergers.

J'ai également étudié le rôle du chien dans les relations entre humains et loups, ce qui me pousse à poursuivre l'investigation du rôle d'animaux que je qualifie d'"intermédiaires" dans les relations entre humains et grands prédateurs. L'écologie et le comportement d'autres espèces domestiques comme sauvages semblent en effet pouvoir influencer les relations que l'homme entretient avec les grands prédateurs au travers de réseaux de relations qu'il est nécessaire d'appréhender dans toute leur complexité et de manière dynamique.

C'est pourquoi je m'intéresse particulièrement aux pays dits en transition (Kirghizstan, République de Macédoine, Bulgarie, Pologne) ainsi qu'aux changements de paysage en Europe. Les relations entre loups, chiens et élevage me poussent également à m'intéresser au temps long en remontant jusqu'à la période de domestication du chien.

D'un point de vue plus théorique, mes recherches peuvent alimenter différents débats en anthropologie de la nature et questionner la séparation entre humains et animaux, entre nature et culture, et entre sauvage et domestique. Elles peuvent également aider à construire un point de vue critique sur des mouvements contemporains comme les mouvements de conservation, de réensauvagement, de libération animale, etc.

After a university education in biology and ecology and a master training in environment, I made a PhD in Ethnoecology. I adopted an interdisciplinary approach based on ethnological methods to better understand human – animal relationships through an epistemological approach of local ecological knowledge and scientific knowledge. I try to grasp the way these knowledge are built in interactions with animal populations as well as the way human practices are influencing animal behaviour and ecology.

I notably studied relationships between humans and large carnivores (wolves, bears, lynx, and jaguars), focusing on livestock herders and hunters’ knowledge, perceptions and practices associated with these animals. This drove me to be interested in the role of what can be qualified as “intermediate animals” between humans and large carnivores.

Indeed the behaviour of dogs, game animals and livestock appears to have an impact on the relationships between humans and large carnivores through complex networks of relationships that need to be apprehended in their complexity and in a dynamic way. That’s the reason why I am notably interested in countries in transition such as countries from the former USSR or former Yugoslavia, as well as regions undergoing landscape changes like mountainous regions from Western Europe.

The relationships between wolves, dogs and livestock also drove me to be interested in human – animal relationships on the long term, going back to domestication of dogs and stock animals.

On a theoretical point of view, my studies can feed various debates in anthropology of nature and question the separation between humans and animals, between nature and culture and between wild and domestic. They can also help to build a critical point of view on contemporary movements such as various conservation movements, rewilding, animal liberation, etc.

My profile lies at the interface between scientific research and management in the field of ecology. My subjects of study mainly concern ecology of large predators (wolf, jaguar, lynx) but also of fauna linked to agriculture landscapes (Eurasian hamster, bee). The tools I use are derived from biostatistics and mainly from modelling: point process methods, individual-based modelling, spatial capture-recapture, occupancy, kernel density estimation.

Je cherche à mieux comprendre l'écologie d'insectes associés au pastoralisme pour pouvoir optimiser les pratiques de gestion (préservation de la biodiversité et des fonctionnalités écologiques, limitation des nuisances). J'étudie, en parallèle, des espèces auxiliaires et nuisantes pour mieux comprendre les relations ambivalentes que l'Homme entretient avec les espèces sauvages au sein des écosystèmes anthropisés. La perception de ces taxons fait partie de mes questions de recherche.

Je développe enfin des méthodologies pour évaluer l'état de conservation de l'entomofaune, à l'échelle des populations et des peuplements.

PhD candidate – EPHE & CEN Occitanie

Ma thèse a pour objectif d’étudier l’efficacité des mesures compensatoires d’un grand projet d’infrastructure, la LGV « Contournement Nîmes-Montpellier » (CNM). Les mesures sont majoritairement des mesures agro-écologiques à destination des outardes canepetières, œdicnèmes criards, lézards ocellés, orthoptères, dianes… L’étude permet d’appréhender les facteurs de succès ou d’échecs d’un projet compensatoire dans son ensemble et également d’apporter un retour sur des protocoles d’évaluation des mesures. Cette thèse permet aussi d’améliorer les connaissances sur l’écologie d’espèces méditerranéennes et mener à des préconisations de mesures de conservation.

Yildiz Aumeeruddy-Thomas développe des travaux qui interrogent les relations entre les sociétés et la biodiversité, et la nature plus largement. Anthropologue et écologue, ses travaux se situent à la croisée de ces deux disciplines. Ayant travaillé dans divers grands biomes de la planète, les forêts tropicales humides, le hautes montagnes Himalayennes et la Méditerranée au cours de ces 35 dernières années, elle s’intéresse à la fois à la diversité des interfaces entre nature et culture, mais aussi aux traits communs qui caractérisent les sociétés humaines et leurs expériences avec le vivant. Soucieuse des grandes questions environnementales actuelles, elle est engagée dans le dialogue entre sciences et politiques, notamment à l'IPBES en tant qu’auteur de l’Evaluation Globale. Elle a mené au cours des dix dernières années, des travaux sur la domestication des arbres et l’agrobiodiversité en Méditerranéenne. .

Yildiz Aumeeruddy-Thomas' work examines the relationships between societies and biodiversity, and nature more broadly. As an anthropologist and ecologist, her work lies at the crossroads of these two disciplines. Having worked in a number of the planet's major biomes - tropical rainforests, the Himalayan high mountains and the Mediterranean - over the last 35 years, she is interested both in the diversity of the interfaces between nature and culture, and in the common features that characterise human societies and their experiences with living beings. Keenly aware of today's major environmental issues, she is involved in the dialogue between science and policy, notably at IPBES as author of the Global Assessment (2019). Over the last ten years, she has been working on the domestication of trees and agrobiodiversity in the Mediterranean.

Research Themes

(1) Synergies between local and scientific knowledge for a deeper understanding of social-ecological systems

My thesis in Sumatra under the Direction of Francis Hallé (Tropical Botanist) and the guidance of Claudine Friedberg (Antropologist, specialised in Indonesian societies) gave me the opportunity to study the relationships between the Kerinci people and their highly complex agroforestry systems, comprising hundreds of trees, domesticated and wild, with multiple material and symbolic values that integrate tubers, spicy species, medicinals and magic species, all of which are intricately linked to the Kerinci people's life. The Kerinci people, would not have been very happy to speak with somebody that could not perceive the difference between a durian, a mangosteen, or the 22 varieties of bananas that they grew or even the 13 species of wild bambous that they encouraged to grow in the agroforests.  Fortunately I was trained in tropical botany and in ecology in Montpellier. However to understand such systems I also required to develop approaches in anthropology, and was highly encouraged by Claudine Friedberg and other anthropologists with whom I eagerly developed many exchanges. Adjoining the agroforestry systems, the ricefields were not less diverse, although seemingly very homogenous. Precisely, all the different varieties of traditional rice harmoniously matured at about the same time, thus preventing people from having to watch only withina short period, the birds that attack the ripe rice. Yet newly introduced varieties grew in different small and fragmented plots that ripened at different periods; they represented an easy prey for the birds, making the life of Kerinci people extremely difficult. They spent a huge amount of time protecting their precious staple food with a variety of strange sounds and mecanical systems to keep away the birds. My thesis was therefore a school in situ about the importance of agrobiodiversity, rythms of labor in an agrarian society and the necessity to look carefully in situ at the complexity of local social organizations as well as ecology. Multiple evidence approaches, giving a full attention to local knowledge through ethnographic studies while also using approaches to observe ecological phenomena is a prerequisite to develop our understanding of such social-ecological systems.

(2) Classifications and local ontologies: how to establish a dialogue between different actors in order to seek sustainable approaches

Since 1990, I have  studied ways different sociéties, the Kerinci people in Indonesia, the Dolpo people in Nepal, the Cevenols in France, the Jbala in Morocco and lately the Pantescans in Pantelleria, Sicily, classify living elements of nature, and also soils, winds, as well as non-tangible. These studies  are based on ethnographic data and fine and long periods of  field-based investigations, represent the means of understanding the basis of local knowledge systems and how local collective human groups classify and share knowledge about nature. Such approaches have led to a major result that is the overlapping of different classification systems within each of these societies, showing different relational  systems, that may vary according to professions, differentiations between symbolic and naturalist classifications. Classifications, as well as recording of myths and local stories, investigating memory and attachment, as well as ways a given society engage materially through practices with plants or other elements of nature, are the set of elements required to decipherhuman-nature  ontologies, i.e. principles that regulate the relationships between people and other elements of nature.

(3) Domestications past and on-going, dynamics of agroecosystems, agrobiodiversity and associated local knowledge and practices at landscape level ; associated multiple values

My work has focused since 2006 in the Mediterranean basin, on 'traditional' agroecosystems in northern Morocco and France and lately in Sicily. My focus on trees, especially in Morocco on olive (Olea europeae), almonds (Prunus dulcis) and figs (Ficus carica), as well as argan (Argania spinosa) has enabled to foster our understanding of ways people interact with a tree populations forming a continuum ranging  from wild parents, feral or escapees from agriculture, to domesticated landraces within local territories

(4) Dialogue between science and policy for the inclusion of local and indigenous knowledge and promotion of transformative changes within the context of global changes.
