Road networks and traffic volumes are increasing rapidly across the globe. For example, in OECD countries, road densities increased by about 10% between 1990 and 2011, whilst traffic densities increased by 55%. Although roads are frequently cited as fragmenting wildlife populations, the mechanisms are poorly understood with the obvious exception of direct collision fatalities. In this talk, I will explore the impacts of street lighting and traffic noise on bats, and consider how these effects can be mitigated."
