PhD Title: “Wolf demography in human-dominated landscapes: Insights for wolf conservation in the Anthropocene”

The primary objective of this project is to investigate the impacts of anthropogenic factors on large carnivores' persistence in human-dominated landscapes. Anthropogenic impacts on habitats and animal populations are resulting in worldwide species range contractions and population decreases, and such heterogeneous landscapes can affect the distribution of organisms and produce habitat-specific population demography. We will use the wolf as a model species to address how different humanization levels can influence habitat selection and land use and ultimately affect their demography, status and viability.

    (English follows)

After a university education in biology and ecology and a master training in environment, I made a PhD in Ethnoecology. I adopted an interdisciplinary approach based on ethnological methods to better understand human – animal relationships through an epistemological approach of local ecological knowledge and scientific knowledge. I try to grasp the way these knowledge are built in interactions with animal populations as well as the way human practices are influencing animal behaviour and ecology.

I notably studied relationships between humans and large carnivores (wolves, bears, lynx, and jaguars), focusing on livestock herders and hunters’ knowledge, perceptions and practices associated with these animals. This drove me to be interested in the role of what can be qualified as “intermediate animals” between humans and large carnivores.

Indeed the behaviour of dogs, game animals and livestock appears to have an impact on the relationships between humans and large carnivores through complex networks of relationships that need to be apprehended in their complexity and in a dynamic way. That’s the reason why I am notably interested in countries in transition such as countries from the former USSR or former Yugoslavia, as well as regions undergoing landscape changes like mountainous regions from Western Europe.

The relationships between wolves, dogs and livestock also drove me to be interested in human – animal relationships on the long term, going back to domestication of dogs and stock animals.

On a theoretical point of view, my studies can feed various debates in anthropology of nature and question the separation between humans and animals, between nature and culture and between wild and domestic. They can also help to build a critical point of view on contemporary movements such as various conservation movements, rewilding, animal liberation, etc.

I work to reveal how animals perceive and adjust to their environment, and why this matters for populations and ecosystems. My model of choice: large herbivores. Because you can (relatively) easily monitor their behaviour in natura, and they have important ecosystem effects. Some have high societal and economical values, so my research sometimes matter beyond basic science. We (as humans) are making the world's climate different. How this affects organisms in the hottest applied ecological question. I do my share to bring an answer to it

PHD project:What are the drivers of European otter recolonization in France? Making the best of non-invasive sampling with statistical ecology.

Supervisors: Olivier Gimenez (CEFE-CNRS), Sébastien Devillard (LBBE)

    Project outline

The aim of my PhD is to study the recolonization of the European otter (Lutra lutra), which has been taking place in France for over a decade. My research mostly focuses on the spatial dimension of recolonization with three main objectives.

First, I am building distribution models that integrate both protocol-based data from a national monitoring plan and opportunistic data to map the species’ range expansion. I will then investigate how this expansion is favoured or hindered by habitat characteristics and landscape connectivity.

In the same time, I am studying how to include alternative sampling strategies like environment DNA in the monitoring plan for this species, using a case study in several catchments near Montpellier.

Finally, using sequencing data from scats collected in several areas, I am using capture-recapture methods to compare the socio-spatial organization of otters – home range size, sex-ratio, individual turnover – in their core range and in the colonisation front.

    About me

    English

My work is at the crossroad between fundamental research and conservation. My biggest motivation is to understand and mitigate the impact of human activities on biodiversity. My main area of interest is population ecology. Therefore, my research mostly focusses on impacts at the population scale, but not exclusively. The methods I use rely heavily on modeling (demographic projections, in particular) and statistical analysis of wildlife monitoring data (counts, capture-recapture, occupancy). I work closely with many biodiversity stakeholders, on projects involving a wide range of vertebrate taxa: seabirds, land birds, terrestrial mammals, seals and amphibians.

Currently, my research is focused on studying the impact of the energy transition, particularly the development of wind power, on birds. As part of the MAPE project, I developed a Shiny application (EolPop) to quantify the demographic impact of bird collisions with wind turbines. I then developed the EolPower application, which helps defining the study design of carcass search surveys that are carried out on wind farms to estimate avian mortality. Since 2022, I have been working on the BIRD DYNAMIC project, which aims to estimate the cumulative impact of offshore wind farms on seabird populations along the French Atlantic coast.

Project: How much difference are Protected Areas making to the conservation of biodiversity?

    Supervisor: Ana RODRIGUES

My PhD aims to understand the effectiveness of protected areas in conserving biodiversity, using bird monitoring datasets. Comparing spatially biodiversity inside and outside protected areas, I wish to understand which biodiversity metrics (abundance, richness, specialisation, rarity index, endemism...) are affected by the presence of protected areas across the globe and how.
